2002 Renault Scenic knocking underneath

ive recently noticed a bad clunking noise from underneath, back end thought it was something loose in the boot but its got bad now so much so that it only has to be an uneven road and its noisy sounds like something is falling off my mate had a look underneath and found the petrol tank was loose where it sits on the brackets he wedged some rubber pipe in and it seemed to stop for about 10 mins then started again has somthing snapped or fallen off ???? or is there supposed to be rubber on the brackets????? is this a common fault
