2006 Renault Scenic smell when air con turned on

When I turn the air con on the smell in the car is awful. The best description is very sweaty feet. Is there an air filter somewhere that requires changing ? If so where and how easy is it to do ? Possible to do at home ? I know the engine air filter is a problem to change.

Job done this afternoon, just managed to get new filter before local auto spares closed. Old filter was dirty so hopefully will do the trick. Quite easy to change once I found where it was hidden.
Tip for any one planning this little task, wait till car engine cools down as you have to take the plastic cover off the top of the engine which exposes hot pipe running over the top of the engine. Nice red mark on my arm as proof of task completed.
Just for the record it is situated in the bulk head, accessible from under the bonnet in the centre behind engine.
