2001 Renault Scenic won't start

Car: Renault Scenic
Year: 2001
Variant: 1.4 expression
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
The Scenic was running normally when I parked up at 9pm but when I tried to start it at 10am the following day it tried to turn over but just died. I called the breakdown service and the mechanic said he thought it was a timing issue but didn't elaborate. When the key is turned in the ignition it sounds like it's going to start but won't catch. The breakdown mechanic assured me that fuel was getting through and couldn't pick anything up on the diagnostics. A friend suggested that the only fix is a replacement engine in which case I'll probably scrap the car. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Could be something minor like low battery , engine coolant temp sensor , lazy starter or as suggested timing may have jumped .Surprised the break down guy was not more helpful . As for your friend suggesting a new engine , what does he base this on if he doesn't know what is wrong ????? I would suggest getting a second opinion of fault and estimate for repair .Then you can decide if it's a viable move or not .

if it turns over but dont start it could be real simple like the crank sensor or even just the connections in the crank sensor plug. try moving the wiring to it whilst someone cranks the key its on top of the gearbox where it joins the engine and can be hard to see but you can feel the wires to it
