2002 Renault Scenic hunting while idling

hi.
when car is idling(ticking over)engine is reving up and down.....rev needle on dash is moving up and down too.....rev needle never goes over the 1000 rev mark(when idling).car never stalls when idling but comes close at times.drives great.slight improvement when cars up to running temperature.would appreciate any helpful comments.thanks
