1998 Renault Scenic speedo and miles not working

The speedo on my wife car works when it wants to. Sometimes it works and tells you how fast you are going and the mileage goes up, then speedo drops to zero and the miles stop going up. Can anyone help?

Speed sensor or check wiring at sensor .
