2002 Renault Scenic car starts then cuts out

My car starts and cuts out after a few seconds. The mechanic has checked the electrics and there is no fault, been in the garage now for three weeks!

Three weeks !!!!! I think he must be struggling and maybe doesn't want to admit it .Have you had a diagnostic scan to see if any faults shown ? Could possibly be TDC sensor , check this out ,
