2000 Renault Scenic sloppy transmission when cold

Car: Renault Scenic
Year: 2000
Variant: 2L automatic transmission
Categories: Leaks & Noises
Hi, the transmission is very reluctant to engage gear when engine is cold. hesitant, engine races. If I let the engine tick over for a few minutes then all is fine. I have no problems with the transmission at other times. Steep hills are not a problem except that I can smell burning on tackling very steep hills.
Is this indicative of a need to change transmission fluid and filter? Or is it likely to be a sign of a more serious problem with the transmission. The vehicle has done around 104K miles ... no service record available (I believe the recommended interval for fluid change is 40K miles.
Grateful for any relevant comments, mel.
