2003 Renault Scenic trouble starting, cutting out, black smoke

Car: Renault Scenic
Year: 2003
Variant: Renault Megane Scenic Privilege VVT 1598cc
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
When attempting to start the car you have to keep the your foot on the accelerator to keep it revving or it will cut out. if not it just cuts out and then you have real problems starting it. It will just keep trying to turn over and then you get a lot of black smoke. until its been running for a about 5mins it well cut out if you slow down or stop. its been to the garage and the changes one of the sensors but this has not helped, they have had it on diagnostics but nothing has come up.
anyone got any idea what it might be or had this problem and now sorted any advice would be great thanks
Also have a hand brake fault - doesn't work at all but that's a whole different story. will post that one seperatly

Could try changing engine coolant temp sensor ( lets engine know how much fuel is needed )

when was oil and filter last changed if not done in last year change it with correct grade oil as starting point if no joy clean throttle body check for any split hoses that could cause an air leak coolant temp sensor or crank angle sensor could be at fault but this should have put engine light on i assume spark plugs are ok you could also try a good quality injector cleaner like forte

UPDATE - We have changed the camshaft senor after my husband reading something on another site and all seems good. Car is running better then I ever remember it running. All for £15. He's said he look at getting the throttle body cleaned too. Not going to have the same luck with the handbrake I fear!!! But at least its starting.

Thank you to both of you for your advice

Another update- so the camshaft sensor hasn't solved the start problem although it does start better then before. We have now ordered engine coolant sensor, will let you know how we get on!!!!
