2004 Renault Laguna hollow knocking from rear

Occassionally not always there is a hollow knocking from the rear. I have had check visually and all ok.
Could the float be loose in the fuel tank, gauge working ok?
Seems to happen when tank half full, not always when going over humps aor around corners. If it is loose float, is it easily repaired?

If the float was off tank unit , the gauge wouldn't be working correctly .
