1999 Renault Laguna lack of power and starts splutering after 4 thousand rpm

Car: Renault Laguna
Year: 1999
Variant: 1.8 rt sport man
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
the car has a big loss in power and seems to have even less at higher revs, often starts to spluter after 4 thousand rpm but up to then is quite smooth, it sounds quite loud as if the exhaust is blowing but it passed an MOT like that, it starts first time every time and ticks over smoothley for 20-30 seconds and then the revs seem to drop and rise very slightly. its been like thisfor several months and hasnt got any worse or better, gave it a service with plugs oil oil filter air filter and 10K boost with no change, the cars done 158,000 miles, is it just at the end of its life? please help.
