1998 Renault Laguna auto box /service light

I am driving along, and the service light comes on, and the auto box then fails to change up to 4th. I stop, turn off and restart, and the problem clears. Any thoughts.

Either get it scanned to see what faults show or it might be worth getting fluid ATF checked / changed .
