2005 Renault Laguna auto gearbox fault

When driving suddenly got a loud clunking noise coming from engine compartment and warning of " check gearbox " on instrument panel immediatley pulled off road and switched off engine. When restarted engine everything appeared o.k ( instrument panel clear ) and have since driven car for several hundred miles until it happened again yesterday with exactly the same outcome, I was able to drive car as normal after restarting engine. Anybody know what is causing this

i suspect a lazy box band. internal fault. recomend overhaul by a auto box specialist.
