coolant/stop light flashes up and get a thumping noise but 9 times out of 10 goes back to normal. when thumping noise goes feel as if power has failed

Car is overheating for whatever reason and thumping noise is usually coolant boiling / banging in header tank .

my temperature gauge stays in middle of clock face, and fan is working
