2003 Renault Laguna alternator burning out

I've just had the alternator replaced with a new (not reconditioned one), and it has burned out after about 400 miles of uneventful motorway driving at steady speed over 3 days.
What could the problem be? Presumably, it's not likely to be the alternator itself given that it's less than a week old.

Forgot to mention - the battery is more or less new - only a couple of months old.
