2000 Renault Laguna start up problem

Please Help!!!
When I press the start button, about 80% of the time the car starts normally, however on the other times the starter motor just spins away, turning the engine but no signs of firing until the starter button times out. Re-pressing the button a further once or twice has always succeeded in starting the car, no coughing or misfires. No apparent difference between hot or cold starts???

get a garage to wire it up and see if a fault code comes up
