1996 Renault Espace difficult cold starting, white smoke rough idle

Hi, I am having diffculty starting our diesel Espace. She reluctantly starts and then shudders eraticaly, emitting white/greywhite smoke. However after about 3 minutes driving she settles down, no smoke, smooth idle. There seems to be no loss in performance and no clouds of smoke when accellerating hard.
We only get this problem from a cold start i.e. after standing for over 4 Hrs. Any other time she starts and runs just fine.
The engine has done 183K miles but does not use any oil.
Could the problem be down to the glow plugs?

it has a cold start valve but it is almost def the glow plugs disconet from bar check with ohm meter should be 1-2 ohms but on that milage/age id just replace the set

sounds like you have a glow plug not working, you can use ohm meter to test or remove and connect to a 6v battery to see if it heats up. have done this many times myself. dont use 12v battery as most plugs approx 9v.

I removed the glow plugs and measured them with a multimeter, 2 read 1-2 ohms the other 2 were O/C, replaced the glow plugs now starting not a problem. However, now after about 10 seconds from a cold start the engine begins to run rough and starts belching out white smoke again! After a short run all is well and a hot start does not exhibit this fault, anyone got any ideas?
