1991 Renault Espace stuck in 4th gear.

Hi - Gears are stuck in 4th and lever just flops about - linkage enters gearbox extension and we have movement that far - need to access inside extension - this unbolts from main box and have everything disconnected but something still holding - does large nut on end of extension require removal for this to happen? Any known faults such as selector coming loose on shaft etc? Thanks in anticipation!
