Gear change not possible on high rev

while dropping from 5th to 4th gear on the highway, the engine revved, and since then gear change became difficult, as if the clutch stopped releasing completely. how can this happen suddenly, and what can it be please?

Check the clutch cable /clearance , but could be knackered clutch .
