1998 Renault Clio temperature

every so often my car gets realy hot and then goes to quarter of gage in a short time just a bit worried as i know this is not normal can anyone help pleas

Your car will get hot occasionally till the electric fan cuts in , especially in traffic .Only cuts in at certain temp and runs till temp drops .Thats assuming it's working as it should .

yeah but this is happening without the fan cuting in in im thinking might be the thermastat as the car was showing nerly full on the temp gage so turnd on the heating to cool and it blew cold air out this was at a stand still then when i started to drive it droped right down to below quarter on temp gage after two mins of driving

As you suggest , test thermostat first in case it is sticking .
