,jerking /high revving /overheating

2008 Renault Clio

Year: 2008
After 6kms driving , car started to jerk and to rev high to about 3000 . Stopped and checked water ,which was boiling at that point ie engine was overheating and electrical light was on for the fault warning.
After it has cooled down the car drives again for a few kms and then the same problem reappears.

What could the problem be ?

Check coolant level when cold and top up if needed .Check thermostat not jammed close .Check for any coolant leaks .If still having problems might need to get a block test carried out to see if head / gasket damaged with overheating .
