Noisy differential

2000 Reliant Robin 848cc
Car: Reliant Robin
Year: 2000
Variant: 848cc
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
When the engine is running at 1500rpm and above a loud low pitch continuous whine is coming from the differential. It drowns the engine noise as the revs increase. Itstops when the clutch is depressed, so possible noisy wheel bearings can be dismissed. If a new differential is needed (ratio 3.23:1) are new complete units available or new components, as the existing diff is over 20 years old. Any ideas please ?

Sure it's the diff and not gearbox layshaft bearings ?

if the noise goes when you press clutch then its either the release bearing, gearbox or diff, check underneath to see if you can pinpoint the area it is coming from, also worth checking the gearbox and diff oil levels
