the headlights switch on without manual interaction, happens early on in journey, to turn off use switch to turn on and off again. Guess it's better than having them turn themselves off.

Get your "Comms" unit tested/replaced.
Oh and if you don't know the "Comms" unit is basically all the steering column switches are connected into the comms.
it sits on the steering column under the wheel.
And they're always failing.
