2009 Peugeot 308 faulty anti pollution message

Hi there, I have an 09 plate Peugeot 308 petrol. I left work today and as soon as I turned the ignition the temp gauge hit red, the fan kicked in and I got the "faulty anti pollution" message despite the car being sat still for over 6hrs previously. I managed to get home as not too far but the engine light was on as well as a stop warning.
I have let the car cool and checked the oil cap and dipstick are secure on the advice on my garage but it has happened again when I turned the key to check.
Any ideas on what is causing this?

Possible faulty coolant temperature sensor or a short circuit in the wiring harness would be my first guess.
Try disconnecting the coolant temperature sensor plug and see what that does to the gauge.
Oh and treat the garage advice with scorn,
What the hell the dip stick or oil cap has to do with engine temperature beats me,
unless the engine has actually melted,
literally!

Don't treat the garages advise with scorn as they are correct in what they say.The intake side of things is a little bit different on the vti engine and a loose oil filler cap or a dipstick not sealing can bring a light on.
I could be a fault with the coolant thermistor.Best bet is get it to your garage and get them to check it out.
