Check for power at the lamp connector first of all.

seems to be a fairly common problem.
this is often as a result of the earth wire corroding at harness joint.
squeeze the little tab and separate the black plastic socket off of the tail light assembly and look at connector pins inside the socket housing.
the earth wire is the larger green and yellow one, look at the corresponding pin on tail light side of connector,
all the pins should be same length although they may be different thicknesses.if the pin is burnt out you may have found your problem.
