2008 Peugeot 308 steering wheel tightening over time

Car: Peugeot 308
Year: 2008
Variant: HDI 1.6
Categories: Steering, Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres
I bought an 08 reg 308 from a Peugeot garage in November 2011 and all was going well for a month until I noticed a rigid/sticky feeling in the steering wheel after driving the car on my daily commute. When I start the car the steering wheel is slack and light as a feather but after around 20 mins it feels more rigid. The feeling is as though the steering wheel wants to pull back more and has no slack/bounce.

I checked the PAS fluid and it was correct level and maintained the tyre pressures at the designated 2.3 bar to no avail. I took the car to the garage I bought it from and they test drove it, but only for 5 minutes - and reported there were no faults recorded with the PAS ECU.

Can anyone advise if they have encountered this problem with the 308 or what it could possibly be? It is quickly becoming a major annoyance during my daily commute and the garage won't look into it further without hard evidence of a fault.

Check when the fault occurs that you are getting fluid movement i.e.that the pump is still working.also on some systems there is a gause strainer in the resovoir that may be clogging.other than that it sounds like a blockage when its intermittant which could be in the rack but if you can see that your getting plenty of pump pressure when it occurs you will be able to eliminate the pump as ok.

it may be a faulty pump but are there any faults in the abs ecu?

I took the steering wheel to lock a few times when stationary and when I checked the PAS fluid I noticed bubbles on the dipstick. Should there ever be bubbles in the PAS fluid?

you sometimes get a few bubbles. do you have to top up the level at all as there may be a leak at the rack.i.e into the bellows

Hi is it possible for screenwash to leak into the PAS system in a 308 or are they completely separate?

No faults recorded in ECU. Would the ECU report a fault if air is getting into the system?

Does the steering in a 308 naturally become very heavy considering this is an 08 plate?

I had the PAS fluid drained and the mechanic said it was ' gooey'. Does this indicate air is getting in and how would you test it?
