when changing from 1st to 2nd gear only its very harsh and feels crunchy mainly at moment when cold but now sometimes when hot

If nothing wrong with cable / linkage , whatever is fitted on that car , sounds like worn synchro . On the off chance , could check g/box oil level , but usually should affect all gears if low .
