Check around turbo to cat joint. the joint here sometimes requires new clamp .also if particulate filter present this can block causing back pressure and exhaust gases blowing out of joint

I had this problem on my 55 plate HDI. For me it was a manifold gasket. The job is around 10 hours labour to complete. It's about 4hrs to investigate properly so once in you might as well go the distance, be prepared to get it done in one go if paying a mechanic...
If you need the pipe, I believe it's main dealer only and about £700 (I called a main dealer & you get a return ££ on the old one apparently, Make sure you check that this is in your favour should you need one)
You could always just keep the air recirculator button pressed I think and save £500+.
