2001 Peugeot 307 car keeps cutting out when slowing up at lights and roundabouts

engine revs drops to 200 when slowing up at roundabouts and lights etc then cuts out, but starts immediately with key or letting up clutch.
I have had car with main Peugot dealers in Godalming, the they diagnosed a stepping motor which they installed, this worked only for a few miles, they said it was a faulty stepping motor and replaced this to no avail.They now say it is possibly the ECU unit and want £700 to install.I find this a bit worring as I feel they should have diagnosed this in the first place instead of charging me £169,as the car isn'n worth much more than £2,000.
I have had another garage send off the ECU unit to be checked and it came back stating that it is ok.
Very confusing and expensive,has anyone had the same problem and can they help.

You don't say what engine in car ? But on checking / asking about this cutting out , like Peugeot dealer and other garage , can't get a known solution to fault besides what has already been done . Seems to be a known , common fault .This confirms that,

As well as a raft of recalls, the 307 has been subject to all sorts of reliability issues, so you need to look very carefully before buying one. Some 307s can suffer from the engine cutting out and/or all electrical power being lost,

I had this problem with a 406. The MAPs sensor was dirty €30 to clean
