2002 Peugeot 307 transmission noise

bearing noise from drive system. the noise comes and goes and is affected by reversing and or turning sharp corners. it can just 'switch on' when driving on the straight and then quieten for no apparent reason. I thought that it was the nearside outer CV joint, replaced it but the problem returned. The car has done 56000 miles.

could be the wheel bearings that need replacing but its all a process of elimination with most cars
