Not attaining top gear. causing engine to overheat

The car starts well but will not rise into top gear.

Get the gearbox ECU scanned,
similar to scanning the engine ECU but looking for fault codes in the gearbox ECU.

ECU presumably is an electronic control unit? Do most garages have them or just Peugeot ones?

Separate ECU's for engine and gearbox,
So any garage equipped with Peugeot's diagbox software can read the "Box" ECU,
Other diagnostics may/may not read.
Certainly Bosch's KTS diagnostics can read the box ECU so if you have a Bosch diagnostics specialist near you call them.
But it's mostly the top end of scanners that can read this far into the system..
These are not cheap so you find they charges aren't going to be cheap.
Unless you have a local Peugeot specialist nearby?
