2005 Peugeot 307 anti pollution fault

Car: Peugeot 307
Year: 2005
Variant: 2.0 coupe
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
Hi Peugeot 307cc, car runs like a dream up until last few days.
The car is a 2litre 307cc petrol.
Last few days fuel consumption has gone through the roof and the car is lagging on acceleration, then today anti pollution light on temperature gauge in the red. The car has covered 65k since new and is regularly serviced etc,
I have asked a few garages this afternoon and been quoted anything from £90 to £700 for there suspicions and diagnostics.
First thought possibly is a the thermostat sensor has gone bad so needs changing which I'm pretty confident I could do, just trying to find the location of it? in the engine bay,
But I'm a little hesitant as I can't understand why the car is lagging if this is the cause.
I have a local garage who have had the car a couple of times suggesting straight away to put in a new ecu but again this just seems extreme for first suggestion.
Any ideas would be great thanks.

It needs scanned,
everybody is just guessing without it.
And a faulty ECU is an extreme guess,
Avoid whoever threw that one out!
Now it may be a lot of cash for the scanning but I've seen cars fitted with lots of new parts in what is known as "parts darts",
as in bound to hit it eventually,
Right?
Wrong.
Pay for a full global scan with Diagbox software.
Peugeots own diagnostic system.
