Automatic transmission fault

2003 Peugeot 307 1.6 Automatic

While driving iin 4th, (in automatic mode) - jumps (harshly) down to 3rd and meny shows "Automatic transmission fault".
Read up on the net in different posts.
-Change gear oil/filter
-Change solenoids. (Can you do that and update afterwards or do you have to update ECU before?)
-Clean out the gearbox...
-Update ECU in general. (Cost?)
Any tips/info would be appreciated.

Get it scanned and see what fault codes are showing .
