2007 Peugeot 307 not starting

I was driving the car when the engine cut off. The anti pollution light comes on when you put the key in the ignition. Took it to a Peugeot dealership. They diagnosed and said that the cam belt and water pump (among others) needs to be replaced. Could this be right? There is about 165k on the clock.

Every possibilty that is the cause .Why do you doubt the dealerships diagnosis ?

The water pump,s are just plastic ,on the impeller parts and prone to failure.You normally hear a squeaking from them when they fail.

Iam most doubtful as to the competency or truthfulness of that dealer.
A water pump will not affect cold starting... Timing belt, unless broken or if you have jumped a tooth, again wouldn't cause startup issues.
Before entrusting the car to a dealer, get yourself an OBD2 scan tool and plug it into the on board socket. This is located behind the lower dash panel, the one where the headlight height adjuster is located.
Once you have the fault identified, then see if you are capable of making the necessary repairs, or replacements.
I had a similar problem to yours and found that the diagnostic revealed "multiple engine misfires". Replacing the Coil Pack and Spark Plugs was just the fix, hence why I doubt the capabilities or sincerity of this dealer.

If the water pump bearing goes, and is driven by the cambelt as I believe it is on that engine , that is your fault as the belt will jump and timing will be completely out .If an interference engine , more damage can be expected .
