2005 Peugeot 307 engine knock

My 307 has started to intermittently make a loud knocking sound which sounds as if there is air in the diesel system the engine seams to miss when idling but stops when I rev up has anybody any suggestions as to where the problem is as it has stumped me

Difficult one could be diesel knock caused by timing or injector issue,or fuel delivery issue ,maybe. A new filter as a first step ,if there are no codes to go on.

Thanks for the reply but Iv,e seamed to have solved it due to being serviced recently I totally dismissed the fuel filter but just out of frustration changed it and found water in the filter housing so it seams just a bad batch of e--o diesel
