my wifes pug 307 when running low on petrol yuu can smell it in the car,this is the only time you do smell it when it s running low. ive also noticed it sometimes lacks abit of umph now and again, is this related in anyway...also i went to look at the spark plugs the other day i didnt change just cleaned them up i noticed they smelled of petrol,again is this all related and any help please with this problem...thanks.

I'd be having a look at the carbon canister and the vent solenoid.
Tanks these days are sealed,any vapour is stored in the carbon canister tank and meant to be vented into the intake given certain conditions,if your solenoid is stuck open it'll stink and screw around with the mixture control,odd idle speeds and emisions.
