We had a flat tyre the other week, we've had it fixed, but now the spare tyre won't go back in it's place under the car. The cord won't winde up.

Best thing to do is unbolt the unit from the wheel well so you can inspect it. They are not complicated so you should be able to easily see the problem with it off the car.
