Splutters when cold..... engine warning light comes on

When i start the car from cold or wet it splutters and jerks till the engine warms up a bit and sometimes back fires slightly....Also when on a journy of 100 miles or so the car will splutter the engine warning light will come on and there is a lack of power. the light stays on for a day or so then goes off again

Could try the engine coolant temperature sensor .
