2006 Peugeot 307 stalling while in motion

While in motion especially on the highway the car suddenly refuses to accelerate and begins to stall somtimes I hear explosive sounds from the exhaust.happens unpredictably and without warning.any solution please?

Assuming it's a petrol , check plugs / coil pack , may also be cat convertor or all three .
