As I drove to work this morning i noticed steam coming from the right hand side of the drivers footwell, it stopped once the car stopped and when i lifted the bonnet there was no steam, it has also been leaking an oily substance in the drivers foot well for a month or so, also have to keep filling the water up but can't see any leaks from the radiator or anything.

Hi.
Ufortunately you have a leak in your heater rad a.k.a heater matrix. This is a second smaller radiator located behind your dashboard. It part of your cooling system. Tis is why your coolant levels keep going down. Its what gives you your hot air inside the car. If you're lucky you might get away with using a bottle of radweld. Although this can cause problems if it gunks up your system. A garage could qoute you over 800 quid to fix this. I did it myself with the haynes manual and 2 ten hour days. You have to take the whole dasboard out and is even harder if you have air conditioning. I temporarily stopped the leak by cutting the two coolant pipes in the engine bay that go through the bulkhead into the inside of the car and joining them together. Any plunber or decent mechanic can do this for 20 quid. It will stop the leak but you won't have any hot air in the cabin which is a problem for the winter, I know from experience!
