1997 Peugeot 306 cooling fan won't stop - flattens battery

Help, please -

The cooling fan on my 306xld won't stop. I've tried disconnecting various relays, etc, and the only ways I've found of stopping it are to either remove a 40 amp fuse in the under-bonnet fuse box or to disconnect a cylindrical unit that's mounted on the fan housing behind the radiator grille. Haynes manual doesn't list this kind of problem. Has anyone else experienced this?
