1997 Peugeot 306 gearbox 5th gear issue

Car: Peugeot 306
Year: 1997
Variant: LXDT 1.9
Categories: Gearbox & Clutch
Hi,
My peugeot kept slipping out of 5th gear on over run i.e.when you take you foot off the accelerator quickly.
Since then it popped out on Saturday doing 80...er I' mean 70 down the motorway and would not go back in!
I did attempt it twcice as slower speed but it crunches when you try to engage it, iv'e tried it twice....not since.
However all the other gears work perfect.
Any suggestion please?
Also is it a difficult fix or could a reasonable diy-er tackle / do it?
thanks

Unless you have experience of gearbox repairs, I would suggest you change the complete box. But that of course means quite a lot of difficult work if you dont have the facitities, garage, pit/ramp, big jack etc. Would imagine the vehicle is high mileage and low value. Maybe finding another example would be easier.

Sounds like worn synchro.Either a replacement box or an overhaul .You could get a box from scrappy , but could be as bad or worse than your own .There should be some local g/box specialists in Yellow pages , usually a lot cheaper and quick in fitting plus you will get waranty. You can read this also ,
