If you go here , http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Peugeot-306-Speed-Sensor-pickup-for-MPH-Odometer_W0QQitemZ250533947235QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxq20091121?IMSfp=TL091121175002r21506 you will see what the speed sensor you are looking for which is normally fitted to transmission / gearbox looks like .You can also check wiring first for dirt/corrosion/ broken wire in case that is cause .
