Cutting out and exhaust fumes

Recently I have noticed a lot of exhaust fumes coming from my car. It seems to happen in any gear at any speed. Occasionally there are clouds of it. Also, it often cuts out. Its starts no problem but then just revs itself a few times and cuts out.
Anybody have any idea what could be causing this?

you need to get the car recovered to a garage as its to dangerous to take yourself with the fumes and get them to have a look underneath to see if there is anything that may have come adrift ie sensors loose

Without seeing the car it is not easy to say if the two problems are related, but i would say that for certain you have an exhaust leak close to the engine, possibly the manifold.
