2000 Peugeot 306 auto will not chnage up

When traveling for about 20 minutes, suddenly gear smacks down as if the engine revs up and won't hear higher. Looks as if its stuck in 3rd gear unless ignition is turned off and car allowed to cool.

You need it scanned for fault codes or checked out by a reputable auto trans shop .
