1996 Peugeot 306 handbrake not holding on hill

HI,
Hope someone can help... so last night i pulled up in the petrol station and engaged my handbrake... it came all the way up to the top, i have tried to park the car on a hill (to test) and the handbrake doesn't hold at all on a hill...
Any ideas?

Need to get brake linings checked. Also make sure that there is no oil or anything else that may have contaminated the brakes. Also get handbrake cable checked!!!!!...

Handbrake cable sounds to be over stgretched. Try taking it up but you may need a new one
