my car won't start at all, nothing happens when i turn the key. it can be jump started, but the battery doesnt charge even after a long drive and as soon as i turn the engine off, it wont start again and would need another jump start.
i would assume it was a straightforward battery problem and would replace it except my lights still turn on and my radio still works and i dont know if this should be possible if it was only the battery that is the problem.
i dont want to spend the money on a battery only to find that it was the starter or something else that was the problem. i know very little about cars (this may be obvious now!) and so would like some advice please.

If your car starts with jump leads connected to another battery,then it must be your battery,not charging,you must be part running of your alternater,which will damage it,(make sure your battery connectors are tight,see if your battery is dry,if yes top up with distilled water,and then put battery on charge,if it will not take a charge,then its 100% battery US,if your car turns over with a jump,your starter must be ok,you could also have a power drain,(but sounds like battery to me)

yep ive already tried topping it up with distilled water and it didnt work. ok thanks alot, think i will save on the mechanics and just replace the battery myself.

my micra was left sitting overnight with the lights on, the battery was flat as it could be. after getting a jump with leads i tried to go for a drive to charge the battery but the car keeps losing power and dying on me . is ths the battery or is there an unedrlying problem? how much can i expect to pay for a new battery ? thank you for your time
