2006 Nissan Almera rumble when accelerating

Car: Nissan Almera
Year: 2006
Variant: 1.5 S Manual
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I have noticed a deeper sounding rumble from the front of the car. This mostly happens just above 3,000 and 3,500 rpm, in 3rd, 4th or 5th. If I let of the accelerator the noise slows and disappears, if I accelerate the noise quickens and disappears. In both instances the engine sound of the car sounds normal before and after the occurrence.
At present I am avoiding driving in these situations, short shifting or matching revs above for overtaking.
I have read some of these other descriptions and they seem to suggest a possible gearbox problem?
