2006 Nissan Almera engine light is on and car dies

The engine light is on and when I gear down at a stop the car dies. When I'm in second gear the car is still on but when I gear down to 1st the car dies and then I struggle to get the car started again. I have to give some petrol to get the car started then.

As suggested , you need it scanned to see what has triggered light and what codes are stored .
