1990 Nissan Almera bouncing revs

Car: Nissan Almera
Year: 1990
Variant: 1.6
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
had this problem a few weeks, the revs on the car keep dipping , the needle bounces up and down slightly when idle , never over reving, but whilst driving seems to be worst between 2,000 and 3,000 revs, causing the car to lurch along and then seems fine above 3,000 revs, when it first happened the engine management light came on , then was intermitent and does not come on at all now, anybody got any ideas.

Could have a check for any air leaks from vac hoses / pipes etc. You may need to get a scan to see what code stored if nothing apparent .

Sounds like a timing chain fault. However I'm not sure if changing it gets rid of the problem as mine has failed about 13,000 miles, a sensor and a front cross member, later. Not sure what I will do next ??? Chance another timing chain, go for an engine replacement or fall out with my friend (mechanic). Can anyone advise me on this ? Seems a waste of a recall (airbag issue) and 1 years free roadside assistance.
