2003 Nissan Almera compression loss

I was travelling when my compression seemed to drop all of a sudden and I could not get my revs above 3000 in 4/5 gear.
What could this be down to?

I am assuming it still runs but just won't rev up, in this case i would say you have an engine speed sensor fault, more commonly the crank sensor if it won't rev more than about 3000
